Consumer Units

Consumer units are the enclosures, often called fuse boards, that take the incoming single-phase supply and divide it into individually protected circuits. Our range includes Live Electrical metal clad enclosures from 6 to 22 modules, split load boards with twin 63A RCDs, Garo surface distribution boxes, and the MCBs, RCBOs, surge protection and busbars to fit them out.

Get trade pricing on a Meteor trade account, and order in-stock boards by 5pm Monday to Friday for delivery the next working day across NI and the Republic of Ireland.

How to choose the right consumer unit

The best board for a job depends on the number of circuits, how you want them protected and where the unit will be mounted. Working through the points below will narrow the choice quickly.

Board types

  • Main switch enclosures - an empty metal clad board with a 100A main switch, ready to populate with RCBOs so each circuit is protected independently.
  • Split load boards - circuits are grouped behind two 30mA RCDs, such as the Live 16 module board with 2 x 63A RCDs.
  • Surface distribution boxes - IP40 Garo enclosures with 14 to 42 modules for sub-boards and commercial use.

Sizing and specification

Count the circuits you need now, then allow spare ways for future additions such as an EV charger or garden supply. Remember that devices differ in width: a standard RCBO may take two modules, while a single module RCBO takes one. Check the main switch rating, whether a surge protection device is required, and that the enclosure suits the location.

Fitting out the board

Use protective devices from the same manufacturer as the enclosure so they connect correctly to the busbar. Browse our MCBs, RCBOs and busbars and accessories including blanking strips and lock off kits.

Compliance

Replacing or installing a consumer unit is notifiable work in many cases and should be carried out by a qualified electrician. In the UK, domestic consumer units are expected to be non-combustible (usually metal clad) under BS 7671; check the current wiring regulations for your jurisdiction and the manufacturer's instructions before installation.

Meteor Electrical is a family-run wholesaler with 40+ years of experience, and every board ships with the manufacturer's warranty. Orders over £30 / €35 ex VAT travel free, and Click & Collect is available at our Cookstown trade counter.
