How to choose smart heating controls

Smart controls make existing heating more responsive by adding scheduling, zoning and remote access. The right product depends on what is being controlled: a boiler, an immersion heater, electric underfloor heating or individual radiators.

Common types

  • Multi-channel receivers with thermostat display: Secure 2 and 4 channel receivers control heating and hot water zones from a programmable room unit.
  • Smart immersion controls: schedule and boost an electric immersion heater to suit tariffs and demand.
  • Intelligent radiator valves: give room-by-room control of wet radiators.
  • Wi-Fi underfloor thermostats: Heat My Home 16A units in black or white for electric underfloor heating.
  • Wi-Fi fused spurs: the Timeguard Tuya Edition spur switches fixed appliances, such as heaters, on a schedule or from an app.

Compatibility checks

Before ordering, confirm the load current and voltage of the equipment being switched, and that the control's relay rating is suitable. For immersion heaters, check the element rating against the controller. For underfloor heating, confirm the thermostat suits the mat or cable system and its floor sensor. Check whether the system uses a hub or connects directly to Wi-Fi, and that the app platform suits the user. The WIFIMOD card adds Wi-Fi to specific compatible controllers, so check the model numbers listed.

Installation and wiring

Most smart controls replace or sit alongside existing wiring and should be installed by a competent electrician in accordance with BS 7671 and the manufacturer's instructions. Allow for a neutral connection where the device requires one. For hot water, our water heater range pairs well with immersion controls, and standard thermostats and timers remain an option where app control is not needed.
