Enclosures
Weatherproof enclosures are sealed IP rated boxes that house switches, sockets and modular accessories outdoors or in wet areas, protecting them from rain and dust. This range includes Zahler IP66 1 gang and 2 gang empty boxes, a Selectric IP66 heavy duty 2 gang universal accessory box and Gewiss IP55 3 module and 4 module enclosures.
A Zahler IP66 enclosure is also available supplied with a USB socket. Trade account holders get trade pricing, and orders for in-stock enclosures placed before 5pm reach NI and ROI the next working day.
How to choose a weatherproof enclosure
A weatherproof enclosure lets you use standard or modular accessories in places they could not otherwise go: garden walls, driveways, car ports, farm buildings and commercial exteriors. The right box depends on what goes inside, the IP rating needed and how cables will enter.
Types of enclosure
- 1 gang and 2 gang empty boxes: Zahler IP66 boxes that accept suitable accessories behind a sealed lid
- Universal accessory box: the Selectric heavy duty IP66 2 gang box for a wide choice of accessories
- Modular enclosures: Gewiss IP55 enclosures in 3 module (99x82x55mm) and 4 module (132x82x55mm) sizes for modular switches and sockets
Key things to check
Confirm that the accessory you plan to fit is compatible with the box in size and depth, with room for cable bends. Choose IP66 for exposed walls and IP55 for more sheltered areas. Check whether the lid allows a plug to stay inserted with the cover closed. Plan cable entries carefully and use suitable glands or grommets so the rating is maintained. Colour may matter too: black boxes blend with dark cladding and fencing, while grey suits render and stone.
Installation and compliance
Fix enclosures to a flat, solid surface so the seal sits evenly, and mount them with entries facing down. Do not drill extra holes in the body unless the manufacturer allows it. Outdoor socket circuits need RCD protection under current wiring regulations (BS 7671), and cables to remote locations often need SWA armoured cable. For larger distribution or junction needs, see our galvanised and PVC enclosures.
