Choosing workwear and safety equipment

Personal protective equipment is the last line of defence after hazards have been designed out or controlled, but on a busy site it is used every day. Getting the right kit, and making sure it fits, means it is more likely to be worn.

What is in the range

  • Safety glasses – clear wraparound lenses for drilling, cutting, chasing and working overhead, giving side protection from dust and debris.
  • Nitrile coated gloves – good grip in oily or damp conditions with reasonable abrasion resistance.
  • PU coated gloves – thin and dexterous, ideal for handling small components, fixings and terminations.
  • LED head torches – rechargeable via USB, leaving both hands free in lofts, ceiling voids and plant rooms.
  • Tool case – the C.K Magma Tech Tool Case Plus for keeping tools and PPE organised.

What to check

Look for markings showing compliance with the relevant standards for eye and hand protection, and check the performance ratings on gloves for abrasion and cut resistance. Size gloves properly: loose gloves reduce grip and dexterity. Note that general work gloves are not electrically insulating; insulating gloves are a separate, specialist product. Your employer's risk assessment should set what PPE is needed for each task.

Care and replacement

Replace safety glasses when lenses are scratched, and gloves when coatings wear through. Recharge head torches after use so they are ready for the next job. Keep PPE clean and stored away from sharp tools.
