How to choose Euro modules and plates

Euro modules give installers a flexible way to build data and media outlets. Each module clips into a faceplate aperture, so a single plate can carry any mix of network, telephone and TV connections. The main decisions are plate size and finish, module type and module colour.

Choose the plate

Plates come in 1, 2 and 4 aperture versions. A 1 aperture plate suits a single data point beside a TV or desk, while 2 and 4 aperture plates combine network, aerial and telephone connections in living rooms and offices. Metal finishes such as satin chrome, black nickel and antique brass let data points match decorative metal switches and sockets.

Common module types

RJ45 CAT5e and CAT6: for wired network connections, matched to the cable category
RJ11: for telephone and some alarm or broadband connections
Master and secondary telephone: for incoming lines and extensions
Coaxial: for TV aerial and satellite, with or without a Faraday cage
Blanking modules: to cover unused apertures neatly

Installation tips

Terminate data modules to the correct wiring standard and keep untwisting of pairs to a minimum, using suitable data networking tools. Match the module category to the network cable and patch panel. Keep data cables separated from mains cables where required by current wiring regulations and cabling guidance, and choose a back box deep enough for the cable bend radius. White modules suit white and chrome plates, while black modules contrast with darker metal finishes.

What does a Faraday cage do on a coaxial socket?: A Faraday cage is a metal screen around the coaxial connection that helps shield the TV or satellite signal from electrical interference, such as noise from nearby mains cables or appliances. It can improve signal quality, particularly for digital TV and in busy wiring areas. A non-screened socket is fine for many domestic aerial points with a strong signal.
What is the difference between a master and secondary telephone socket?: A master telephone socket is the first socket on an incoming telephone line and contains components that the network provider's equipment relies on. Secondary sockets are extension outlets wired from the master to provide telephone points in other rooms. Normally only one master socket is fitted per line, and some providers supply their own master or broadband faceplate.
