How to choose the right plastic conduit

PVC conduit is a versatile, low-cost way to protect cables, and it is easy to cut, bend and fit. Choosing the right profile, gauge and diameter keeps the job neat and the cables properly protected.

Round or oval?

  • Round conduit (20mm, 25mm) – surface or concealed runs with fittings and boxes, offering good protection and capacity.
  • Oval conduit (such as 23mm super oval) – flatter profile for burying drops to switches and sockets in plaster.
  • Flexible PVC conduit – for awkward routes and final connections to equipment.

Light or heavy gauge?

Heavy gauge conduit, such as Univolt 25mm, has thicker walls for better impact resistance and is the usual choice for exposed surface runs and commercial work. Light gauge is lighter and cheaper, suited to areas with little risk of damage. Use the matching gauge of bending spring, as a light gauge spring will not support heavy gauge conduit properly.

Fittings and boxes

Circular boxes (through, tee, angle, U, Y and intersection) let you change direction and draw in cables, while inspection bends and tees give access at corners. Saddles and space bar saddles fix the run to the wall, and female adaptors connect conduit to boxes and enclosures. Order fittings in the same diameter as the conduit.

Installation tips

Plan a draw-in point at least every couple of bends, keep bends gentle so cables can be pulled through, and support conduit at the spacing recommended by the manufacturer, allowing for expansion on long runs in changing temperatures. Calculate cable capacity using published cable and conduit factors. Where conduit enters boxes, use matching boxes from our PVC and galvanised socket boxes range. For tougher environments see steel conduit, and for final connections flexible conduit.

Meteor Electrical supplies conduit and fittings from our Cookstown warehouse. Delivery is free over £30 / €35 ex VAT, and credit accounts are available subject to approval.
