How to choose a wired door bell

Wired door bells remain popular because they are reliable, need no batteries and work without Wi-Fi. A system needs three parts, a bell push, a chime and a suitable low voltage supply, linked by bell cable.

Parts of a wired system

Bell push: the button at the door; illuminated versions are easier to find at night
Chime: the sounder inside, mounted where it can be heard throughout the property
Transformer: steps mains voltage down to a safe low voltage for the push and chime
Bell cable: connects the components

Transformer or built-in supply

Some chimes, like the Eterna model in this range, have a built-in transformer, so the chime is connected to the mains and the push is wired at low voltage. Others need a separate bell transformer, such as the Red Arrow 8VA unit, installed in a suitable enclosure. Check that the transformer's output voltage and VA rating suit the chime, and that any illuminated push is compatible, as the push lamp draws a small current continuously.

Installation tips

Use bell cable for the low voltage runs between push, chime and transformer, keeping it separate from mains cables where required, and fix it neatly with suitable cable clips. Fit the push at a comfortable height beside the door and position the chime centrally. The mains side of the transformer or chime must be installed to current wiring regulations (BS 7671) by a competent person, typically from a fused spur or a dedicated circuit.
