Choosing pushwire or lever connectors

Spring-clamp connectors have become a standard part of the electrician's toolkit because they save time and give consistent contact pressure. The two styles in this range suit slightly different jobs.

Pushwire vs lever: which to use

Pushwire connectors accept solid conductors pushed straight into the port. They are compact and quick, ideal for joining several solid cores in ceiling roses, light fittings and back boxes.
Lever connectors have a lever on each port that opens the clamp. They accept solid, stranded and flexible conductors and can be reopened, which is helpful for fault finding and alterations.

Selecting the right size

Count the conductors you need to join and pick a connector with enough ports, such as 2, 3, 4, 6 or 8 way pushwire, or 2, 3 or 5 pole lever versions. Check the conductor size range and current rating printed on the connector or packaging, and make sure they suit the cable and the circuit's protective device. A lever connector is the better choice when one of the conductors is a flexible lead, for example from a pendant or appliance.

Installation tips

Strip each conductor to the length shown on the connector, which usually has a strip gauge moulded into the side. Insert fully until no bare copper is visible outside the body, then give each conductor a gentle tug to confirm it is held. Connectors must be housed in an enclosure such as a junction box, accessory or fitting. Some connectors are marked as maintenance-free for use in inaccessible locations, so check the product marking and current wiring regulations before concealing a joint.
