Choosing the right plug top

Most appliances in the UK and Ireland use a 13A fused plug, but round pin plugs are still found in theatres, studios, hotels with switched lamp circuits and older buildings. Fitting the right plug top keeps equipment compatible with its outlets and protects the flex.

Round pin plug sizes

2A round pin: the smallest size, mainly for lamps on dedicated switched circuits in older installations
5A round pin: commonly used for lamp circuits controlled from a wall switch in hotels and homes
15A round pin: the largest size, widely used for stage and studio lighting and some heavier equipment

Each size only fits its matching socket, which prevents equipment being connected to the wrong circuit. Unlike 13A plugs, round pin plugs are usually unfused, so protection comes from the circuit's own protective device or dimmer.

Wiring a plug top

Use three core flexible cable sized for the load. Strip the outer sheath so it sits under the cord grip, cut the conductors so the earth is the last to pull free if the cable is strained, and connect brown to line, blue to neutral and green and yellow to earth. Tighten terminals firmly and check that no strands are loose. Good wire strippers make a neater job.

When to use a different plug

For site tools and three phase equipment, BS EN 60309 industrial plugs are the right choice. For general appliances, use a fused 13A plug with the correct plug top fuse. Check current wiring regulations and the equipment manufacturer's instructions.
