Choosing meter and telephone boxes

External meter and telephone boxes protect equipment that the network operator or telecoms provider needs to reach, so they need to be weatherproof, durable and accessible.

What we stock

Tricel exterior telephone box – a 300mm x 220mm x 175mm enclosure for housing external telephone connections on the outside of a building.
Meter cubicle door – a replacement door for an existing meter cubicle where the original is damaged, faded or missing.

Things to check before installing

The position and type of meter cabinet is normally set by the electricity network operator, so check their requirements before installing a new meter box or altering an existing one. When replacing a cubicle door, measure the opening and hinge arrangement carefully and compare it with the product details so it fits properly. For telephone boxes, confirm with the telecoms provider where the incoming line will terminate and what space is needed.

Installation tips

Mount enclosures securely on a flat surface using fixings suited to the wall, and seal around cable entries to keep water and insects out. Run incoming cables in suitable ducts or conduit and seal duct ends. External telephone cable should be a filled, external-grade type such as the PJ poly cable in our telephone cable range. Never work on the supply side of a meter, which belongs to the network operator.

Can I replace just the door on a meter box?: Yes, in many cases a damaged or missing meter cubicle door can be replaced without changing the whole cabinet. Measure the opening, hinge and catch positions and compare them with the replacement door's details before ordering. Do not disturb the meter or incoming supply, which belong to the network operator.
Who decides where an electricity meter box goes?: The electricity network operator normally sets the requirements for meter position and cabinet type on new connections and alterations. Check their current guidance before installing or moving a meter box, and coordinate with them for any work affecting the incoming supply.
What is an exterior telephone box used for?: An exterior telephone box houses telephone line connections on the outside of a building, protecting joints from weather and tampering. It provides a neat termination point where an external cable meets internal wiring. Confirm placement and requirements with the telecoms provider before fitting.
Are meter boxes weatherproof?: External meter cabinets and telephone boxes are designed for outdoor use and resist rain and sunlight when installed correctly. Keep doors closed, seal around cable entries and fix the box securely. A damaged door should be replaced promptly to keep water out of the enclosure.
How do I fit an exterior telephone box?: Mount the box on a flat external wall at the agreed position using fixings suitable for the masonry, then bring the cables in through sealed entries, ideally from below to prevent water ingress. Terminate connections according to the telecoms provider's requirements and close the lid securely.
