Choosing control and automation components

Whether you are building a motor starter, a pump control panel or a simple local stop station, the parts should be compatible with each other and suited to the operating environment.

Operator devices

Push buttons - green for start and red for stop are common conventions; mushroom head buttons are easier to hit in an emergency stop situation.
Selector switches - 2 or 3 position stay put switches for hand-off-auto or mode selection, with key operated versions to prevent unauthorised changes.
Pilot lamps - LED indicators in 24V and 230V AC/DC show run, fault or power status.
Contact blocks - collar and back mounting N/O contacts complete the operator.

Enclosures and protection

Empty 1 hole and 2 hole control stations take standard 22mm operators, letting you build local controls next to machinery. Check IP ratings where devices will be exposed to dust or washdown. Overload relays protect motors from sustained overcurrent and are fitted with a contactor, set to the motor's full load current.

Wiring tips

Mount relays and terminals on DIN rail inside the panel, using our DIN rail and terminal blocks and panel and control gear. Emergency stop circuits have specific safety requirements, so follow the relevant machinery standards, the manufacturer's instructions and current wiring regulations.

What is a Push Button?: A pushbutton switch (push switch) is a device that is pushed to complete or interrupt an electrical circuit. The end user would push the button to stop the circuit.
How does the Push Button work?: When the switch is pressed, an electrical flow is activated in a circuit. When the button is released, the circuit is broken, and the electrical flow is paused.
What IP rating does Push Buttons have?: If your switch needs to be weatherproof, you'll need one with a higher IP rating to ensure the switch's safety and functionality. What are Selector Switches?: Selector Switches are designed to control a circuit or group of circuits which is selected by an electric switch. Selector switches are located on the front of a panel and are easy to find and operate.

When more than one control choice is necessary, such as when it must be turned on for a certain period or when it must be set on a specific option after it is turned on, a selector switch is required.
When are Selector Switches used?: Selector switches are commonly used for mechanical, electrical, or electric devices for making, breaking, or modifying the connections in a circuit. It is controlled by moving the handle on the selector switch or switching the current circuits on or off.
What size hole do 22mm push buttons need?: Standard 22mm push buttons, selector switches and pilot lamps fit a panel or control station hole of about 22mm diameter, often specified as 22.3mm. Many operators also have an anti-rotation tab, so check whether a notch is required. Always confirm the cut-out size in the manufacturer's data before drilling.
How do I set a motor overload relay?: Set the overload relay's adjustable dial to the full load current shown on the motor nameplate, making sure that value falls within the relay's range, such as 9 to 13A. The relay then trips the contactor if the motor draws excessive current for too long. Follow the motor and relay manufacturers' guidance.
Why do building sites use 110V transformers?: 110V centre-tapped transformers reduce the voltage to earth to around 55V, which greatly lowers the risk of serious electric shock from damaged tools or leads on construction sites. Portable units like 3.3kVA transformers supply yellow 16A sockets for power tools. Check current site safety guidance and wiring regulations for your project.
