Trailing Sockets

Trailing sockets, also called extension leads, are portable sockets on a length of flexible cable that let you power appliances away from a fixed wall outlet. Our range includes Selectric 4 gang and 6 gang unswitched extension leads, a Click 1 gang with neon, heavy duty 1 and 2 gang trailing sockets and an AVSL 6 gang lead.

A surge protected adaptor, a 4 gang lead with USB, a smart 3 gang surge protected lead and a 16A smart plug complete the selection. Trade prices apply on account, and in-stock items ordered before 5pm on a weekday are delivered across NI and ROI the next working day.

How to choose the right trailing socket

A good extension lead should match the job: the number of appliances, the distance from the wall, the environment and the load. Choosing carefully reduces the risk of overloading and keeps workspaces tidier.

Types to consider

  • Multi-gang leads: 4 and 6 gang leads for desks, workstations and media units
  • Heavy duty trailing sockets: rugged 1 and 2 gang units for workshops and tougher use
  • Surge protected: help protect sensitive electronics from voltage spikes
  • USB leads: charge phones and tablets without separate adaptors
  • Smart leads and plugs: switch devices from an app or on a schedule

Load and length

Every lead plugged into a 13A socket is limited to a total of 13A, whatever the number of outlets, so add up the ratings of the appliances before plugging them in. High-load items such as heaters, kettles and power tools should ideally have their own wall socket. Choose a length that reaches comfortably without stretching the cable or creating trip hazards, and fully unwind cable reels when running high loads, as coiled cable can overheat.

Safe use

  • Do not plug one extension lead into another
  • Check cables, plugs and sockets regularly for damage
  • Use RCD protection where leads supply tools outdoors
  • Keep indoor leads away from water and out of walkways

For permanent needs, extra fixed outlets are usually a better solution; see our switches and sockets or floor sockets. Site teams may also need temporary lighting and power. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and current guidance on portable appliances.
