How to choose the right wall plug

Wall plugs are the everyday fixing for accessories, back boxes, clips and light brackets in masonry. They are inexpensive, but matching the plug, screw and drill bit correctly is what makes them hold.

Colour coding and sizes

Many plugs follow a colour convention that hints at the screw gauge and drill size, although it is not universal across manufacturers, so always read the packaging.

  • Yellow – small screws, typically gauge 4 to 6, for very light items.
  • Red – the most common general-purpose size, typically for No. 6 to No. 10 screws, often with a 6mm drill bit.
  • Brown – larger screws, typically No. 10 to No. 14, for heavier brackets and fittings.
  • Blue – larger again, for heavy-duty fixings in solid masonry.

Getting a secure fixing

Drill the hole slightly deeper than the plug length, clear out the dust and tap the plug in flush. The screw should be long enough to pass through the item being fixed and the full length of the plug, so that it expands the whole sleeve. Use a masonry bit in percussion mode for brick and block, and switch off hammer action in soft or crumbly materials to avoid an oversized hole. Suitable bits are in our drill bits range.

When a plug is not enough

Standard plugs are not designed for hollow plasterboard or for heavy loads. For plasterboard, choose spring toggles or self-drill fixings, and for heavier equipment in concrete, use drop-in anchors or shield bolts from the fixings range. Plastic plugs alone are not normally recommended for overhead wiring supports in escape routes; check current wiring regulations. Screws to suit are in screws.
