How to choose the right installation cable
Choosing cable means matching conductor size, core configuration and sheath type to the circuit and the environment. Here is how the PXCABLES lines compare.
Cable types
- 6242Y 1.5mm brown/brown - twin and earth with both cores brown, commonly used for switched lighting runs where both conductors are line.
- 6242Y 2.5mm blue/brown - standard twin and earth for ring and radial socket circuits.
- NYMJ 4 core 1.5mm LSF - a round, low smoke, fume-free sheathed cable, often used in Ireland and where reduced smoke emission is preferred.
Sizing and installation
Cable size depends on the load, protective device, length of run and installation method, including insulation contact and grouping. Calculate current-carrying capacity and voltage drop to current wiring regulations (BS 7671) rather than relying on rules of thumb. Sleeve bare earth conductors in green/yellow at terminations, and identify brown/brown switch wires clearly so the next electrician can see which conductor is which.
Fixing and support
Support cables at suitable intervals and protect them where they pass through joists or metalwork. Our cable clips suit flat and round cables.
