How to choose DIN rail terminal blocks

Terminal blocks give every conductor a labelled, secure connection point in a panel, making installation, fault-finding and future alterations far easier than joining cables directly.

Types of terminal block

Feed-through terminals - connect one conductor to another, the standard block in most panels.
Earth terminals - make electrical contact with the DIN rail to provide a protective earth connection.
Fused terminals - include a fuse holder to protect an individual control or instrument circuit.
End plates and end brackets - cover the open side of the last block and stop a row from sliding along the rail.

Sizing and selection

Choose terminal size by the conductor cross-section and current. The figures in names such as WDU 2.5 or WDU 10 relate to the nominal wire size in mm². Check the rated voltage and current on the manufacturer's data sheet, and keep to one product family on each rail so blocks, end plates and markers line up correctly.

Installation tips

Use 35mm top hat rail and fix it securely to the enclosure back plate.
Fit ferrules on fine-stranded conductors where the manufacturer recommends them.
Tighten screws to the specified torque and re-check after transport or commissioning.
Fit an end plate and end bracket at each end of a terminal row.
