Choosing a weatherproof outdoor socket

An outdoor socket makes it safer and easier to run power tools, lighting and water features without trailing leads through windows and doors. Because it stays outside all year, the housing, rating and installation need more thought than an indoor socket.

What to check

Look for an IP rating suited to the position; IP66 is a good choice for exposed walls. Check whether the lid can close with a plug inserted if equipment will be left connected. Double pole switching isolates both line and neutral, which is useful when connecting and disconnecting tools outdoors. For smart sockets, confirm that Wi-Fi reaches the wall where the socket will be fixed.

Installation and safety

Outdoor socket circuits normally need 30mA RCD protection, and cables run outside or buried in the ground need suitable mechanical protection, often SWA armoured cable terminated with appropriate glands. Mount the socket with cable entry from below, clear of puddles, and avoid positions directly under gutters. This work should be carried out by a competent person in line with current wiring regulations (BS 7671) and the manufacturer's instructions. Can I use an indoor extension lead with an outdoor socket?: Indoor extension leads are not designed for wet conditions, so they should not be left outside or used in the rain. For outdoor work, use leads and connectors rated for outdoor use, such as a rewireable weatherproof in-line socket fitted to suitable flexible cable. Keep connections off wet ground and make sure the supply is RCD protected.
What is a rewireable in-line socket?: A rewireable in-line socket is a weatherproof socket that you fit to the end of a flexible cable, creating an extension lead or allowing a lead to be repaired or lengthened. It has screw terminals inside a sealed housing. Use cable of the correct size and type for outdoor use, tighten the cord grip properly and check the IP rating before using it outside.
Should an outdoor socket be switched?: A switched outdoor socket is usually more convenient, as it lets you turn off power before plugging in or unplugging equipment. Double pole switching disconnects both line and neutral, adding a further level of isolation. Some installers also fit a switched fused spur or isolator indoors so the outdoor socket can be turned off from inside the property.
Can a smart outdoor socket run garden lights on a timer?: Yes, a smart outdoor socket can switch garden lights, festive displays or pond pumps on schedules set in its app, and can usually be switched remotely too. What cable should I use to supply an outdoor socket?: For a socket on the outside wall of a house, twin and earth run inside the building and through the wall to the back of the socket is common. How do I stop condensation in an outdoor socket?: Condensation is reduced by sealing cable entries correctly, mounting the socket with entries at the bottom and keeping the lid shut when not in use. Seal around the cable where it passes through the wall so warm, moist indoor air cannot travel into the box. Check the socket periodically and follow any drainage advice in the manufacturer's instructions.
