Network Cable
Network cable is twisted-pair data cable used to connect computers, routers, switches, access points and IP devices in a structured cabling system. We stock CAT5e UTP and CAT5 FTP cable, CAT6 UTP enhanced data cable on 305m boxes, and external-grade CAT5e and Premier Cables CAT6 with a waterproof sheath.
Run it to patch panels and data outlets for a tidy, testable installation. Trade account holders get trade pricing, and in-stock boxes ordered by 5pm Mon–Fri are delivered the next working day across NI and ROI.
How to choose the right network cable
The right category of network cable depends on the speeds you need now, what the building may need in future and the environment the cable will run through.
CAT5e or CAT6?
- CAT5e – supports gigabit ethernet over standard distances and suits most homes and small offices.
- CAT6 – built to a higher bandwidth specification with tighter twists, giving more headroom for faster networks and busier installs.
- UTP (unshielded) – the standard choice for most installs.
- FTP (foil screened) – adds a foil screen for environments with electrical interference, but needs screened connectors and proper earthing.
- External grade – waterproof sheath for runs to outbuildings, gates and external IP cameras.
Installation good practice
Keep each permanent link within the distances allowed by the ethernet standards (generally 90m permanent link plus patch leads, 100m in total). Respect the minimum bend radius, avoid over-tightening cable ties and never kink the cable. Keep data cables segregated from mains cables, using separate trunking compartments, and cross power cables at right angles. Current wiring regulations and the cabling standards give guidance on separation distances.
Terminating and testing
Terminate runs into patch panels and comms cabinets at the network end and data outlets at the user end, using one wiring scheme (T568A or T568B) consistently throughout. Test every link after installation. For dado-level office installs, 3 compartment dado trunking keeps data and power segregated.
Outdoor and underground runs
Standard indoor cable is not designed for exposure to water or sunlight. For external runs use waterproof-sheathed cable, run in duct where buried, and seal entries. Flexible conduit gives extra protection on exposed walls.
