Control Devices

Control devices are DIN rail components that switch, time or manage loads automatically from inside a consumer unit or distribution board. Our range includes Garo 1 module and 2 module digital time switches, a Garo 16 Amp analogue time switch, a Garo load shedding relay and a Live Electrical time delay RCD in 80A and 100A ratings.

Trade customers benefit from account pricing, and orders for stocked items received before 5pm Monday to Friday are delivered the next working day throughout Northern Ireland and the Republic.

Choosing the right control device

Board-mounted control devices let you automate heating, lighting and other loads without separate wall-mounted equipment. They take up DIN rail space alongside protective devices, so plan module space when sizing the board.

What each device does

  • Analogue time switches - a mechanical dial with segments set for on and off periods. Simple to program and easy for end users to understand.
  • Digital time switches - programmable on and off events with greater precision, often with weekly programmes.
  • Load shedding relays - monitor the supply current and temporarily disconnect non-essential loads to prevent the main fuse from being overloaded.
  • Time delay RCDs - provide discrimination with downstream RCDs so a fault trips only the nearest device.

Specification checks

Confirm the contact rating of a time switch against the load. A 16A switch can handle modest resistive loads directly, but larger or inductive loads should be switched through a contactor. Check supply voltage, module width and whether the device keeps its programme during a power cut.

Typical applications

Time switches are used for immersion heaters, storage heating, signage and external lighting. Load shedding relays help when adding high current loads, such as an EV charger, to an existing supply. For room-level controls on heating, visit our thermostats and timers range.

Installation

Follow the manufacturer's wiring diagram and work to current wiring regulations. Clearly label any circuits controlled automatically.
