Hardware in this section means the everyday site consumables that sit alongside cable and accessories, from sealants and adhesives to batteries, marking paint and barrier tape. Choosing site hardware and consumables

Picking the right sealant
Silicone is flexible and water-resistant, good for sealing around fittings in bathrooms and outdoors. Hybrid adhesive sealants bond and seal at once and can often be painted, which suits fixing trims and sealing gaps. Choose a colour to match the finish. Neither is a fire-stopping product unless specifically rated, so where cables pass through fire-resisting construction, use certified fire-stopping materials and follow building regulations.
Batteries for test kit and devices
Alkaline batteries suit most voltage indicators, torches and wireless devices. Check the equipment manufacturer's instructions, as some smoke and heat alarms specify particular battery types or have sealed lithium cells.
