NYY-J Cable

NYY-J cable is a PVC-insulated, PVC-sheathed power cable rated 600/1000V, with a green/yellow earth core (the "J"), used for fixed installations indoors, outdoors and in the ground where extra mechanical protection is provided. We stock 3 core and 4 core NYYJ in 1.5mm and 2.5mm, sold by the metre.

How to choose NYY-J cable

NYY-J is a robust round power cable with a tough black PVC sheath. Its 600/1000V rating makes it a popular choice for supplies to outbuildings, external equipment and plant where a standard 300/500V installation cable would not be appropriate.

Where NYY-J is used

Typical applications include outdoor lighting feeds, pumps, gates and garden buildings, as well as runs in cable ducts, on tray and in industrial premises. NYY-J has no steel armour, so where it is buried or at risk of damage it normally needs additional protection such as ducting. Check current wiring regulations and the manufacturer's instructions for burial depth, marking and protection, or choose SWA armoured cable where armour is required.

Selecting cores and size

Choose 3 core for single-phase circuits (line, neutral, earth) and 4 core where an additional line is needed, such as switched or two-circuit applications. The larger High Tuff sizes suit heavier loads and longer runs. Size every cable for design current, grouping and voltage drop, rather than simply matching the existing cable.

Terminating NYY-J

Use correctly sized compression glands to maintain the IP rating of the enclosure, and support the cable so the gland is not under strain. For outdoor connections, a suitable IP-rated junction box keeps terminations dry.
