Product Information
This 3 core 6.0mm² High Tuff cable is an NYY-J type power cable, sold by the metre so you can buy the exact length the job needs. It has solid plain copper conductors with PVC insulation, laid up under a tough black PVC outer sheath. The 'J' in NYY-J means one of the cores is green/yellow and can be used as the protective conductor.
Electricians often use NYY-J for supplies to garages, outbuildings, garden lighting, gates and pumps, and for other fixed wiring where a robust sheath is useful. It is a 600/1000V rated cable. It is not armoured, so it does not give the same mechanical protection as steel wire armoured cable. Where it is buried or at risk of damage, it needs suitable additional protection such as ducting.
- 3 cores: brown, blue and green/yellow
- 6.0mm² solid copper conductors
- Black PVC outer sheath
- 600/1000V rated
- Cut to length, priced per metre
The cable size must be selected for the load, length and installation method, and the installation must comply with current wiring regulations.

Frequently Asked Questions
NYY-J has a tough PVC sheath but no steel armour, so it does not have the mechanical protection of SWA cable. Where it is run underground it is normally laid in a suitable duct, and it must be protected against damage and installed at an appropriate depth. The installer must confirm that the cable and protection method suit the location and comply with current wiring regulations.
Current-carrying capacity depends on the installation method, ambient temperature, grouping and length of run, so there is no single figure. The circuit designer should work it out from the cable manufacturer's data and the tables in current wiring regulations, and check voltage drop over longer runs. Take particular care when the cable is in ducts, insulation or groups.
NYY-J is a German designation used widely across Europe. N means it is made to a standardised specification, the first Y refers to the PVC insulation and the second Y to the PVC outer sheath. J means the cable includes a green/yellow core that can be used as the protective conductor. A version marked O has no green/yellow core.
The black PVC sheath is designed for fixed installation in a wide range of locations, including outdoors, and is commonly used for supplies to outbuildings, garden equipment and external lighting. Clip or support it properly, protect it where it could be damaged, and use glands suited to the cable diameter and environment. Check the cable manufacturer's data for temperature limits and UV resistance.
