Choosing floor sockets for offices, homes and retail spaces

Floor sockets solve a common layout problem: getting power to the middle of a room without trailing leads across walkways. They are mounted flush in a floor void or screed so the outlet is accessible but out of the way.

Floor sockets versus floor boxes

A floor socket is usually a single accessory, 1 or 2 gang, fitted into a suitable box below floor level. For larger commercial jobs that need power, data and AV at the same point, a dedicated floor box with modular compartments is often a better fit, and pedestal boxes work where the outlet needs to sit above floor level.

What to check before ordering

  • Gangs: 1 gang for a single appliance, 2 gang for desks and islands
  • Switching: the floor sockets in this range are unswitched, so equipment is controlled at the appliance or by a local switch
  • Finish: brushed chrome with white inserts for visible positions in offices and homes
  • Floor depth: the void or screed must suit the box and cable entry
  • Blank plates: to close off spare or future positions neatly

Installation and safety tips

Plan positions around furniture so sockets are not hidden under desks or trapped by kitchen units. Keep floor outlets away from areas regularly washed down or exposed to spills, and choose a lid or cover suited to foot traffic where needed. Cable routes should be protected within the floor, for example in conduit or trunking, and circuits should be designed with appropriate RCD protection. Check current wiring regulations and the manufacturer's instructions before installation.
