Dimmer Switches

Dimmer switches let you raise and lower the brightness of a lighting circuit instead of just switching it on and off. Our range covers 1 to 4 gang push on/off dimmers, trailing-edge LED dimmers, grid dimmer modules and empty dimmer plates from Zahler, Selectric, Deta and Contactum, in white, chrome, brass, black nickel, matt black and dark bronze finishes.

Match the finish to the rest of your switches and sockets and choose a dimmer rated for the LED load you are controlling. Trade account holders get trade prices, and in-stock orders placed by 5pm Monday to Friday arrive the next working day across NI and ROI.

How to choose the right dimmer switch

Most dimmer problems, such as flicker, buzzing or lamps that won't dim low enough, come from a mismatch between the dimmer and the lamps. A few checks before you buy save call-backs.

LED dimmers vs older dimmers

  • LED (trailing-edge) dimmers are designed for low loads such as dimmable LED lamps and are the right choice for most new installations.
  • Older 250W to 400W dimmers were made for incandescent and halogen loads and may flicker or buzz with LEDs.
  • Grid dimmer modules fit grid plates, so you can combine dimmers with switches and other modules on one plate.

Key things to check

Check the dimmer's minimum and maximum LED load and add up the wattage of the lamps on the circuit; many LED dimmers have a low minimum load as well as a maximum. Only use lamps marked as dimmable, and ideally stick to one lamp type per circuit. Count the gangs and ways you need: a 2-way dimmer is needed where a light is controlled from two places. Check back box depth, as dimmers are deeper than standard switches, and choose the same finish and plate style as the rest of the room so everything matches.

Installation and safety

Isolate the circuit before removing any switch, and follow the manufacturer's wiring instructions, especially for 2-way and intermediate circuits. Metal plates must be earthed. Replacing a switch like-for-like is usually not notifiable, but check current wiring regulations and use a qualified electrician if you are unsure. Our guides on installing a dimmer switch at home and fixing LED flicker cover the basics.
