How to choose extractor fan accessories

An extractor fan only performs as well as the duct and outlet it is connected to. The right accessories keep airflow high, stop draughts and pests getting in, and add controls that make the fan work automatically.

Grilles and shutters

Gravity shutters – louvres that open when the fan blows and fall closed when it stops, helping prevent back-draughts.
Grilles with fly screens – the Knightsbridge 100mm grilles keep insects and birds out of the ductwork, in white or black to suit the building.
Louvred and gravity-flap wall grilles – 4" (102mm) grilles with a round spigot that push straight into the duct.

Ducting

ATC 4" (102mm) PVC ducting connects 100mm fans to an external grille. Keep runs short and avoid unnecessary bends, use rigid duct where possible, and support it so it cannot sag and collect condensation. Seal joints to prevent leakage using suitable products from our adhesives and sealants, and insulate runs passing through cold lofts.

Timer and humidity modules

Airflow iCON timer and humidity timer modules upgrade compatible iCON fans, letting them overrun after the light is switched off or start automatically when humidity rises. Check the fan model and the manufacturer's instructions to confirm compatibility and wiring before ordering.

Will 102mm ducting fit a 100mm extractor fan?: Yes, in most cases. 100mm extractor fans and 4-inch (102mm) ducting and grilles are designed to work together, with the duct pushing over or into the fan spigot. Check the spigot dimensions in the fan's instructions and secure joints with clips or tape so the connection stays airtight.
What does the Airflow iCON humidity timer module do?: The Airflow iCON humidity timer module adds automatic humidity sensing and timer overrun to compatible Airflow iCON fans. The fan switches on when humidity rises, for example during a shower, and runs on for a set period afterwards. The version we stock includes a pull cord. Confirm compatibility with your iCON model first.
Why fit a grille with a fly screen on a fan outlet?: A fly screen grille stops insects, birds and debris from entering the ductwork through the external outlet. Nests or blockages in the duct reduce airflow and can stop the fan working effectively. Check and clean the screen periodically, as a clogged mesh will also restrict airflow.
