Choosing lubricants, sealants and cleaning products
Site consumables rarely get much attention, but having the right spray or sealant to hand can turn a stubborn job into a quick one and leave a professional finish.
What each product type is for
- Penetrating oil – frees seized bolts, nuts, threads and fixings by creeping into corrosion; allow time to soak before applying force.
- Cutting and tapping fluid – lubricates and cools drill bits, taps and holesaws when cutting metal, extending tool life and improving finish.
- Cleaners and foaming sprays – remove grease, dirt and residue from surfaces, tools and equipment housings.
- Adhesive sealants – bond and seal in one, for weatherproofing around fittings and fixing trims; available in clear, white and black to suit the finish.
- Expanding foam – fills gaps and voids around pipes and cable entries; check whether a fire-rated product is required.
- Superglue and wipes – quick repairs and fast hand and tool cleaning on site.
Using products safely around electrical equipment
Isolate equipment before spraying any solvent, oil or cleaner near it, and allow products to dry or evaporate fully before re-energising. Check that sealants and cleaners are compatible with cable sheaths and plastics; some solvents can attack PVC. Read the product data and safety data sheet, ensure good ventilation and observe any flammability warnings.
Fire-stopping and penetrations
Standard expanding foam and sealants are not necessarily fire-rated. Where cables pass through fire-resisting walls or floors, use appropriate fire-stopping products and follow current building and wiring regulations. See fire protection accessories and cable adhesives and sealants, and browse the wider hardware range.
