How to use a 6 gang extension lead safely
An extension lead is the quickest way to add sockets where a room is short of outlets, but it shares a single 13A plug and fuse across every device connected. Picking the right lead and loading it sensibly matters.
What to look for
- Number of gangs – six outlets suit TV and AV areas, office desks and workshop benches.
- Lead length – 2m reaches from skirting to desk height without excess cable to trip over.
- Total load – add up the wattage of everything plugged in; the combined load must stay within the 13A plug fuse rating (around 3kW at 230V).
Good practice
Avoid plugging one extension into another, keep the lead fully uncoiled and away from heat sources, and keep high-draw appliances such as heaters and kettles on their own wall socket. Check the plug top, cable and outlets regularly for damage and replace the lead if anything is cracked or scorched. Where extra outlets are needed permanently, a fixed socket installed to current wiring regulations is the better long-term answer.
