How to choose industrial sockets

Industrial sockets bring robust, keyed power outlets to workshops, farms, factories, plant rooms and construction sites. Selecting the right one means matching the supply, the plug and the conditions on site.

Types of industrial socket

  • Wall sockets: fixed outlets with a hinged cover, the simplest option
  • Switched sockets: include an on/off switch to control the outlet locally
  • Interlocked sockets: the switch cannot be turned on without a plug inserted, and the plug cannot be removed while on
  • Watertight sockets: higher IP protection for exposed or wet areas
  • Wall inlets: fixed male connectors for feeding power in from a generator or external supply
  • Connectors: in-line sockets for leads, such as the Gewiss straight connectors

Key specs to check

Match the colour and voltage first: yellow 110V, blue 230V, red 400V. Then check the poles, from 2P+E single phase through 3P+E and 3P+N+E three phase, plus the current rating and IP rating. IP44 suits indoor and sheltered positions, while IP67 suits exposed walls and wash-down areas when paired with a matching plug. Make sure the cable entry maintains the rating by using suitable cable glands.

Installation tips

Mount wall sockets with the outlet facing downwards, or at the angle recommended by the manufacturer, so water drains away. Coordinate protective devices such as RCBOs with the socket and cable rating, and label outlets clearly on multi-voltage installations. Use matching industrial plugs and couplers for all connected equipment. Follow current wiring regulations (BS 7671) and site safety requirements.
