Site lighting is portable and temporary lighting used on construction sites, refurbishments and maintenance jobs to keep work areas and access routes safely lit. The range includes 110V LED festoon kits in 22m and 50m lengths, the Luceco UniVolt 18V–20V LED work light, a CK 10W rechargeable LED site light and pocket inspection lights, together with IP65 LUKA non-corrosive fittings.

How to choose site and work lighting

Site lighting needs to be safe, tough and easy to move as the job progresses. Most sites use a combination of fixed temporary lighting for access routes and portable lights for the task in hand.

Types of site lighting

110V festoon kits run strings of lamps along corridors, stairwells and floor plates to give general light during the build.
Cordless and rechargeable work lights, such as the Luceco UniVolt and CK rechargeable site light, go wherever there is no supply and are ideal for second fix and snagging.
Inspection lights are pocket-sized torches for looking into voids, boards and enclosures.

What to check

On UK and Irish construction sites, 110V centre-tapped supplies are widely used for portable equipment to reduce shock risk, so check the voltage before buying festoon or corded lights. Look at the IP rating for exposed or wet conditions, the length and number of lamp holders on festoon kits, and lumen output and battery runtime for cordless lights. Festoon kits need a 110V supply from a site transformer; transformers and other temporary power are in temporary lighting and power.

Safe installation on site

Run festoon cables at height, away from vehicle routes and sharp edges, and support them so lamps do not hang on the cable. Use matching 16A 110V industrial plugs and couplers, and inspect leads and lamps regularly for damage. Follow the site's temporary electrical arrangements, current wiring regulations and the manufacturer's instructions.

Do LED work lights get hot?: LED work lights are an extremely energy efficient lighting solution for your workspace. Due to their efficiency, there is very little heat output. Therefore, there is no risk of the fitting overheating if you leave it running for long a long period of time.
Is festoon lighting waterproof?: Festoon lighting is waterproof, lightweight, robust and has a low heat output, proving to be a great solution for site lighting.
Are LED site lights rechargeable?: Yes, rechargeable LED site lights can be very useful for lighting up your workspace. As they do not need to be wired up, they provide more flexibility with site lighting, allowing you to move the fitting around.
Why is site lighting usually 110V?: Most portable site equipment in the UK and Ireland runs on a 110V centre-tapped supply, which limits the voltage to earth to around 55V and significantly reduces the risk of a dangerous shock if a cable or tool is damaged. This is why festoon kits and corded work lights for building sites are typically 110V. Check site rules and current guidance for temporary electrical installations.
What do I need to power a 110V festoon kit?: You need a 110V supply, normally from a portable site transformer plugged into a standard mains socket, or from a fixed site distribution system. The festoon kit connects using a 16A 110V industrial plug, usually yellow. Check that the transformer's rating covers the total load of all lights and tools connected to it, and follow the manufacturer's instructions on linking kits.
Should I choose a festoon kit or a cordless work light?: Use festoon lighting for general illumination of corridors, stairwells and large floor areas that need to stay lit for the length of a job. Choose a cordless or rechargeable work light for focused task lighting, short visits, or areas without a supply. Many contractors carry both: festoon for safe access throughout the site and a portable light for the work area itself.
