How to choose a bathroom heater

A bathroom needs heat that arrives quickly when you step out of the shower and an installation that is safe in a room full of water and steam. The two products in this category take different approaches, and many bathrooms benefit from using both.

Downflow heaters and towel radiators

Downflow heaters such as the ATC Bavaro are wall-mounted fan heaters that blow warm air downwards, raising the temperature of a small room within minutes.
Heated towel radiators such as the ATC Pacific provide gentle radiant and convected heat, dry towels and reduce damp, but take longer to warm a cold room.

Zones, IP ratings and switching

Bathrooms are divided into zones around the bath and shower, and fixed heaters must only be installed where the manufacturer and wiring regulations permit. Check the IP rating, keep switches and fused spurs out of reach of anyone using the bath or shower (or use a ceiling pull-cord), and ensure the circuit has 30mA RCD protection. Always confirm the details against current wiring regulations, BS 7671 Section 701, and the manufacturer's instructions.

Heat and ventilation together

Heating reduces condensation on surfaces, but moisture still has to leave the room. Pair your heater with a suitably rated bathroom extractor fan so steam is cleared quickly and mould is kept at bay. For entrances and other rooms that need a curtain of warm air, look at our overdoor heaters.

What type of electric heater is safe to use in a bathroom?: Only fixed heaters designed and IP-rated for bathroom use should be installed, such as downflow fan heaters and electric towel radiators. Portable plug-in heaters should not be used in bathrooms. Even approved heaters must be fitted in the zones the manufacturer allows and connected in line with current wiring regulations by a competent person.
Which bathroom zones can an electric heater be installed in?: Most fixed bathroom heaters are intended for installation outside zones 0 and 1, often in zone 2 or beyond, provided the IP rating is suitable. The exact permitted locations vary by product, so check the manufacturer's instructions alongside BS 7671 Section 701 before choosing a position.
Does a bathroom heater need a pull-cord switch?: Not necessarily a pull-cord, but the switching must be out of reach of anyone using the bath or shower. A ceiling pull-cord switch inside the room, or a fused connection unit fitted outside the bathroom, are common solutions. Check the manufacturer's instructions and current wiring regulations for the arrangement that suits your installation.
Is a downflow heater or a heated towel rail better for a bathroom?: A downflow heater is better for warming a cold bathroom quickly, while a heated towel rail is better for steady background warmth and drying towels. In family bathrooms used at set times, many installers fit both: the towel rail runs on a timer for comfort and the downflow heater gives a quick boost when needed.
Can a heated towel rail heat a whole bathroom?: It can in small, well-insulated bathrooms and en-suites, but towels draped over the rail reduce its heat output considerably. In larger or colder bathrooms, a towel radiator is best treated as a supplementary heater alongside another heat source. Compare the rail's wattage with the room's estimated heat loss before relying on it alone.
What IP rating does a bathroom heater need?: The required IP rating depends on where the heater is positioned. Equipment in zone 2 generally needs at least IPX4, and if water jets may be used for cleaning, a higher rating such as IPX5 may be required. Always check the product's IP rating and approved zones in the manufacturer's instructions and current wiring regulations.
