Speaker Cable
Speaker cable is a two-core, polarity-marked cable that carries the amplified audio signal from an amplifier or AV receiver to passive loudspeakers. We stock 79 strand 2 core speaker cable on a 100mt coil, a practical size for home cinema, multi-room audio, background music and small PA installations.
The fine-stranded conductors make it easy to route and terminate. Order on a trade account for trade pricing; if it is in stock and you order by 5pm on a weekday, it arrives the next working day in NI or ROI.
Choosing and installing speaker cable
Speaker cable is simple in construction but makes a real difference to how a system sounds and how easy it is to install. With a single 79 strand 2 core cable in stock, the main decisions are about run lengths, routing and termination.
Why conductor size matters
Speaker cable carries relatively high current at low voltage, so resistance in long runs reduces power reaching the speaker and can affect bass response. Keep runs as short and equal in length as practical, especially for left and right pairs. For very long runs or low-impedance speakers, check the amplifier and speaker manufacturer's recommendations on conductor size.
Typical applications
- Home cinema surround systems, including rear speakers routed through ceilings or walls
- Multi-room audio with in-ceiling or in-wall speakers
- Background music in shops, cafés and offices
- Small PA and paging systems (check whether a 100V line system needs a different cable)
Installation tips
Maintain polarity: one conductor is marked, so connect it to the positive terminal at both the amplifier and the speaker. Reversed polarity on one speaker causes thin, phasey sound. Avoid running speaker cable tightly alongside mains cables for long distances, and use separate containment where possible. For concealed runs, plan first-fix routes before plastering and leave enough slack at each speaker position.
On surface runs, small cable clips or mini trunking keep the cable neat and protected. For other low-voltage cables, including coax and network cable, see our communication cable range.
Terminating the cable
Strip only enough insulation to fit the terminal, twist the fine strands together so no loose strands can short across terminals, and tighten binding posts firmly. Banana plugs or ferrules make repeated connections easier.
