Weatherproof Switches & Sockets

Weatherproof switches and sockets are IP rated accessories sealed against water and dust, so you can safely control lighting and provide power outdoors or in damp, dusty areas. This range covers Zahler IP66 switches, sockets and boxes, Gewiss IP55 and IP56 switches and modular enclosures, and a Selectric heavy duty IP66 accessory box.

Options run from 1 and 2 gang switches and DP switched sockets to an IP66 smart outdoor socket and a rewireable in-line socket. Trade pricing is available on account, and stock items ordered by 5pm arrive the next working day throughout NI and ROI.

How to choose weatherproof switches and sockets

Outdoor accessories face rain, frost, sunlight and dust, so a standard indoor plate is never suitable. The key is to choose the right IP rating, the right type of accessory and an installation that keeps water out of the box and cable entries.

Understanding IP ratings

The first digit of an IP rating covers solid objects and dust, the second covers water. IP55 and IP56 give protection against dust and water jets, while IP66 is dust-tight and protected against powerful jets. For exposed walls, driveways and gardens, IP65 or IP66 is a sensible minimum for sockets. Most outdoor sockets only reach their rating with the lid closed, so consider where leads will be left plugged in.

Installation tips

Mount accessories with cable entries at the bottom where possible so water cannot run into the box, and use suitable glands or grommets to keep the IP rating intact. Use cable suited to the location, such as SWA armoured cable where mechanical protection is needed. Outdoor socket circuits normally require RCD protection, and accessories should be kept clear of standing water and ground-level splashes. Check current wiring regulations (BS 7671) and the manufacturer's instructions for each product. For workshops where knocks rather than water are the risk, metal clad accessories may be a better choice.
