Drill Bits

Drill bits are the cutting tools fitted into a drill to bore holes in masonry, metal, timber and plastics, and choosing the right type for the material is the key to a clean, fast hole. This range covers Olympic Fixings SDS bits from 5.5mm to 22 x 450mm, auger bits, step and cone cutters, HSS jobber twist bits, masonry bits and C.K Tools Fast4 wood bits.

Magnetic bit holders and C.K Vorteck impact sockets are here too. Trade customers get trade pricing and next-day delivery across NI and ROI on orders placed before 5pm on weekdays.

How to choose the right drill bit

Using the wrong bit wastes time and ruins the bit, so start with the material and the drill you are using, then choose the diameter to suit the fixing or cable entry.

Types of drill bit

  • SDS hammer bits – tungsten carbide tipped for concrete, stone and dense masonry; need an SDS drill. Long bits such as 450mm and 600mm reach through cavity walls.
  • Masonry bits – round or hex shank with a carbide tip for brick and block in a percussion drill.
  • HSS jobber twist bits – for steel, aluminium, copper and plastics.
  • Auger and wood bits – fast, clean bores through joists and studs for cable runs.
  • Step and cone cutters – drill multiple sizes in sheet metal and trunking with a burr-free finish.
  • Driver accessories – magnetic bit holders, square bits and impact socket sets.

Sizing and speed

Match the bit diameter to the plug or anchor specification, which is usually printed on the packaging. Larger bits and harder materials need slower speeds; small bits in timber can run faster. Use hammer action only in masonry, and switch it off for metal, wood and tiles. Cutting fluid extends HSS bit life in steel.

Safe drilling

Check walls, floors and ceilings for hidden cables and pipes before drilling, and keep holes in joists within building regulations limits for position and size. Wear eye protection and secure the workpiece. Let the bit cool and clear dust regularly when drilling deep holes.

Pair bits with anchors and fixings, wall plugs and holesaws. Meteor Electrical, family-run for 40+ years, ships free on orders over £30 or €35 ex VAT.
