Product Information
This 3 core 16mm² High Tuff cable is an NYY-J power cable, with copper conductors, PVC insulation and a tough black PVC outer sheath. The 'J' in the type code means one of the three cores is green and yellow for use as a protective conductor, with the other two coloured brown and blue. It is cut to the length you need.
NYY-J is rated 0.6/1kV and is designed for fixed installation indoors and outdoors. Its heavy PVC sheath stands up well to handling on site, which is why it is widely used for supplies to outbuildings, pumps, gates, lighting columns, site equipment and similar loads where a flexible cable would not be suitable.
- 3 cores, 16mm² copper conductors
- Green/yellow, brown and blue cores
- 0.6/1kV rated
- Black PVC sheath, flame retardant
- Cut to length
NYY-J is unarmoured, so think about mechanical protection where the route is exposed to damage or runs underground. Size the cable for the design current, installation method and voltage drop, and make sure installation complies with current wiring regulations.

Frequently Asked Questions
NYY-J is used for fixed installations indoors and outdoors, but it has no steel armour. Current wiring regulations set requirements for buried cables, which for an unarmoured cable usually means running it in a suitable duct or conduit that gives equivalent mechanical protection, at an adequate depth and with marking. Check the manufacturer's datasheet and the regulations before burying it.
The J shows that the cable includes a green and yellow core that can be used as a protective conductor. An NYY-O cable has no green and yellow core. In this 3 core 16mm² version the cores are green/yellow, brown and blue, so it is typically used for single-phase supplies with a protective conductor.
Both are 0.6/1kV power cables, but steel wire armoured cable has a layer of galvanised steel wires under the sheath for mechanical protection, and the armour can be used as a protective conductor in some designs. NYY-J has a thick PVC sheath but no armour, making it lighter and easier to handle, but it needs other protection where damage is likely.
Current rating depends on how the cable is installed, the ambient or ground temperature, grouping with other cables and the run length because of voltage drop. Use the cable manufacturer's data together with the tables and correction factors in current wiring regulations to select the right size and protective device. We do not give a single figure because it varies with these factors.
