Plugs
Industrial plugs are heavy-duty BS EN 60309 connectors that link portable equipment, site tools and extension leads to industrial sockets and couplers. We stock GARO and Gewiss plugs in 16A, 32A and 63A, with 3, 4 and 5 pin layouts for 110V, 230V and 400V supplies.
Pick straight or angled bodies with IP44 splash-proof or IP67 watertight protection, and Selectric 13A fused and 5A round pin plugs are also available. Trade account holders pay trade prices, and in-stock plugs ordered by 5pm Monday to Friday reach sites across NI and ROI the next working day.
How to choose an industrial plug
The right industrial plug depends on the supply it will connect to, the equipment it powers and the conditions it will work in. Because BS EN 60309 plugs are keyed by voltage and rating, getting the specification right first time avoids wasted orders and delays on site.
Match the supply
- Voltage and colour: yellow 110V, blue 230V, red 400V
- Pins: 3 pin for single phase, 4 pin for three phase without neutral, 5 pin for three phase with neutral
- Current: 16A, 32A or 63A to suit the load and cable
- Socket or coupler: must be the same rating and configuration
IP rating and body style
IP44 plugs are splash-proof and suit indoor workshops, events and sheltered outdoor use. IP67 watertight plugs, from both GARO and Gewiss, give a higher level of protection for exposed sites, farms and wash-down areas when mated with a matching IP67 socket or coupler. Angled plugs reduce strain on the cable where the socket is close to a wall or floor, while straight plugs suit general use.
Wiring and maintenance
Use flexible cable of the correct size and number of cores, strip conductors to the length shown by the manufacturer and secure the cord grip on the outer sheath, not the cores. Check the earth connection carefully and confirm phase rotation on three phase equipment. Inspect site plugs regularly for cracked bodies, bent pins or loose cord grips, and replace them when damaged. Complete your setup with matching industrial couplers and industrial sockets and interlocks, and pick up suitable flexible cable. Check current wiring regulations and site safety rules for portable equipment.
