How to choose the right sealant or adhesive

The wrong product can crack, stain or fail to stick, so match the sealant to the surfaces, the environment and how much movement the joint will see.

Main types

  • Silicone sealant - flexible and water resistant, used around baths, sinks, windows and external fittings. Multi purpose silicone suits most general jobs.
  • Acrylic (decorators') caulk - paintable, ideal for internal gaps around skirting and trims, but less suited to wet areas.
  • Construction adhesives - for bonding trunking, boards and fixings to walls where drilling is not ideal.
  • Fire-rated products - specified where a seal must help maintain fire separation.

Key things to check

Look at cure time, whether the product can be painted, its temperature range and whether it is suitable for the substrate, such as PVC, metal, masonry or glass. For external light fittings and weatherproof enclosures, a neutral cure silicone is often preferred near metals and plastics, but always follow the manufacturer's guidance.

Application tips

Surfaces should be clean, dry and free of dust. A sturdy gun like the Avit 400ml model gives steady pressure for a neat bead. Cut the nozzle at an angle slightly smaller than the gap and tool the bead before it skins over.
