How to choose outdoor lights for homes and commercial buildings

Good exterior lighting does three jobs: helping people move around safely, deterring intruders and showing off the building. Most schemes combine a few fitting types rather than relying on one.

Common types of outdoor fitting

  • Up/down wall lights wash light above and below the fitting, framing doors and façades. GU10 versions let you change the lamp and colour temperature.
  • Lanterns give a traditional look on walls, posts and pillars; many accept a standard E27 lamp.
  • Bollards and post lights mark paths and driveways at low level.
  • In-ground and deck lights sit flush with paving or decking, and drive-over versions handle vehicle traffic.
  • Floodlights provide broad security lighting – see our floodlights range.

What to check before you buy

The IP rating tells you how well a fitting resists dust and water: wall lights in exposed positions and ground-level fittings need better protection than lights under a canopy. Material matters too. Stainless steel, copper and coated aluminium or polymer bodies weather differently, so match the finish to the site, particularly near the coast. Decide early whether you want PIR or dusk-to-dawn control; integrated-sensor fittings keep things tidy, while a photocell kit or separate sensor gives more flexibility.

Installation and compliance

External lighting circuits generally need RCD protection, and cable buried in the ground or run along external walls needs suitable protection, such as SWA armoured cable with matching glands. Use weatherproof switches and sockets for external controls. Seal cable entries as the manufacturer instructs and check current wiring regulations before work begins.
