How to choose the right lighting for your project

Most lighting jobs come down to three decisions: the fitting, the light source and how it is controlled. Getting each one right at the start saves call-backs, keeps running costs down and makes the finished space comfortable to live or work in.

Explore the main lighting ranges

  • Light fittings – downlights, LED panels, battens, bulkheads, floodlights, outdoor and industrial luminaires.
  • Lamps and tubes – GLS, GU10, candle, 2D and tube replacements in common cap types.
  • Emergency lighting – exit signs, emergency bulkheads, downlights and conversion modules.
  • LED drivers and lighting controls – phase-cut, DALI, 1-10V and Bluetooth options.
  • Motion detectors, accessories and temporary site lighting to complete the installation.

Specifications worth checking

Compare fittings on lumen output rather than wattage, since LED efficiency varies between products. Colour temperature shapes the feel of a space: around 2700K–3000K for warm, relaxed rooms, 4000K for kitchens, offices and schools, and 5000K–6500K for warehouses and task-heavy areas. Many current LED fittings offer switchable CCT and wattage, so one product can cover several applications and you carry less stock. Check the IP rating for anything going into bathrooms, outdoors or dusty environments, and consider beam angle and glare control where people look up or work at screens.

Installation and compliance

Fire-rated downlights help maintain ceiling integrity where it is required, and emergency lighting must be designed and tested to the relevant standards for the building. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and check current wiring regulations, including BS 7671 zoning rules for bathrooms, before installing. Confirm that dimmers, drivers and sensors are compatible with the LED load before committing to a control scheme.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out how much light a room needs?

Start from the recommended light level for the task, measured in lux, and multiply it by the floor area to estimate the total lumens required. Corridors and living areas need far less light than kitchens, offices or workshops where detailed work happens. Divide that total by the lumen output of your chosen fitting to estimate quantities, then adjust for ceiling height and surface colours. For commercial schemes, a proper lighting calculation is the safest route.

Is it worth replacing fluorescent fittings with LED?

In most cases, yes. LED battens, panels and non-corrosive fittings typically deliver similar or better light for considerably less energy, start instantly without flicker and need far less maintenance than fluorescent tubes. Many fluorescent lamps are also being phased out, so replacements are getting harder to source. Replacing the whole fitting is usually simpler and safer than converting an old fluorescent body, so check the manufacturer's guidance before retrofitting.

What IP rating do I need for bathroom or outdoor lights?

It depends on where the light is going. Outdoors, IP65 is a common choice because it protects against dust and water jets, while IP44 can suit sheltered positions such as under a porch. In bathrooms the requirement depends on the zone, with fittings near a bath or shower needing a higher rating than those further away. Check current wiring regulations and the manufacturer's instructions for exact zone requirements.

Can I use a standard dimmer switch with LED lights?

Only if the dimmer and the lamp or driver are compatible. Many older dimmers were designed for higher-wattage halogen loads and can cause LED flicker, buzzing or a limited dimming range. Use dimmable LED lamps or fittings, choose a dimmer rated for LED loads, and check its minimum and maximum load against the total wattage on the circuit. Manufacturers' compatibility lists are the best way to confirm a pairing.

Do I need an electrician to install new light fittings?

For new lighting circuits, and for work in bathrooms or outdoors, using a qualified electrician is the safest option, as this work is often notifiable or must be certified. A like-for-like fitting swap may be within reach of a capable DIYer, but the rules differ between Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and Great Britain. Check current wiring regulations and building control guidance for your area, and always isolate the circuit first.

Can I get next day delivery on lighting orders?

Yes. Order in-stock lighting by 5pm Monday to Friday and it will be delivered the next working day across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, using our own vans and DPD. Deliveries to England, Scotland and Wales take 3–5 working days. Orders over £30 / €35 ex VAT qualify for free delivery, and trade customers can open an account for trade pricing.

What is the best lighting for a kitchen?

Most kitchens work best with layered lighting: recessed LED downlights for even general light, under-cabinet or strip lighting over the worktops, and a pendant or feature light over an island or table. Neutral white, around 4000K, suits food preparation, while warm white feels more relaxed. Fire-rated downlights are often needed where there is a room above, so check the ceiling construction first.

How many downlights do I need for a room?

A common starting point is one downlight for every 1.2 to 1.5 square metres, spaced roughly 1 to 1.5 metres apart, but it depends on the fitting's light output, beam angle and ceiling height. Rooms used for detailed tasks, such as kitchens, need more light than bedrooms or hallways. Compare lumens rather than watts, and plan a regular grid so light overlaps evenly.

What colour temperature should I choose for LED lights?

Warm white (2700K–3000K) gives a cosy feel for living rooms and bedrooms. Neutral or cool white (4000K) suits kitchens, bathrooms, offices and workshops, and daylight (5000K–6500K) is used in commercial and task areas. Many fittings now offer switchable colour temperature, so one product can be set to suit the room on site.

Do I need emergency lighting in a commercial building?

Most commercial, public and multi-occupancy buildings need emergency escape lighting so people can leave safely if the mains supply fails. Requirements depend on the building's use and fire risk assessment, and systems are usually designed to BS 5266. Emergency bulkheads, exit signs and battens with emergency modules are all available in our emergency lighting range. Check current regulations for your project.
