Electrical Vehicle Charging
Electric vehicle charging points are dedicated outlets that supply AC power safely to an EV's on-board charger at home, at work or in car parks. Our range includes 7.4kW GARO wall chargers in Type 2 socket and tethered lead versions, the GARO Entity with load management, the BG SyncEV Wall Charger 2 with Wi-Fi and LAN, twin 22kW metered ground-mounted units and RFID tags for access control.
Trade pricing is available on account, and in-stock chargers ordered by 5pm Monday to Friday arrive next working day in NI and ROI.
How to choose an EV charger
Choosing a charger means matching the vehicle, the supply and the way it will be used. Domestic, workplace and public sites each have different priorities.
Charger options in this range
- 7.4kW single-phase wall chargers - the usual domestic choice, typically giving a full overnight charge for most cars.
- Socketed or tethered - a Type 2 socket lets drivers use their own lead, while a tethered unit has a cable permanently attached, such as the 7.5 metre GARO lead version.
- Smart and connected chargers - Wi-Fi and LAN models allow app control, scheduling and monitoring.
- 22kW twin-outlet ground mounted units - three phase chargers with metering for car parks, workplaces and fleet sites.
Supply and load management
A 7.4kW charger draws around 32A continuously, which is a significant extra load on a domestic supply. Load management, whether built into the charger or provided by a separate device, reduces charging current when the rest of the property is busy. GARO priority and non-priority metal boards in our consumer unit boards range and load shedding relays in control devices can help.
Installation and compliance
An EV charger needs a dedicated circuit with appropriate overcurrent and residual current protection, such as a suitable RCBO, plus attention to the earthing arrangement. Detached garages and ground-mounted posts are usually fed with SWA armoured cable. Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician in line with current wiring regulations and the manufacturer's instructions.
