How to choose the right ceiling downlights

Downlights are usually bought in quantity, so a small choice made on the first one is repeated across the whole job. Settle these points before ordering.

Integrated LED or GU10?

Integrated LED downlights have the light source and driver built in. They are compact, efficient and often offer switchable colour temperature and wattage, which suits new builds and refurbishments. GU10 downlights take a replaceable lamp, so the client can change brightness or colour later; pair them with lamps from our LED lamps range.

Key specifications to check

  • Fire rating – fire-rated downlights help restore the fire resistance of a ceiling that has been cut into, typically between floors in dwellings. Check the rating against the ceiling construction.
  • IP rating – bathrooms and other wet areas need suitably rated fittings depending on the zone; see our bathroom lighting range.
  • Cut-out size and depth – confirm the hole size and the void depth above the ceiling, especially when replacing existing fittings.
  • Colour temperature – CCT-switchable models let you choose warm, neutral or cool white on site.
  • Dimming – check whether the fitting is dimmable and which dimmer types it supports.
  • Glare and beam – anti-glare and tilt versions suit living spaces and feature walls.

Installation tips

Plan a regular layout so light overlaps evenly, keep fittings clear of joists and pipework, and respect any insulation clearance stated by the manufacturer. Use connectors and cable suited to the fitting, and choose a compatible LED dimmer or driver from our controls and drivers range where dimming is required. Check current wiring regulations, including BS 7671 bathroom zones, and the manufacturer's instructions.
