How to choose strut channel and fittings

Strut is a modular framing system, so the right choice comes down to the channel profile, the load you need to carry and the fittings that tie it all together. Getting these right at the start saves time on site and avoids awkward modifications later.

Channel profiles: 41x41mm or 41x21mm

The two common profiles share the same 41mm width and slot opening, so most brackets and nuts fit both. The difference is depth and stiffness:

  • 41x41mm slotted channel is the deeper section, suited to longer spans, trapeze hangers and heavier runs of cable tray and cable basket.
  • 41x21mm channel is shallower and lighter, useful for wall-mounted runs, shorter spans and where headroom is tight.
  • Slotted channel lets you bolt through at regular centres; plain channel gives a cleaner finish where fixings are made through the open face.

Brackets and connectors

Right angle brackets in 2, 3 and 4 hole versions form corners and knee braces, while splice plates and internal or external connectors join lengths end to end. Flat L and T brackets reinforce junctions, double channel base plates anchor upright posts to floors, and top hat U brackets hold tray clear of the channel. Window brackets with M10 cone point screws clamp channel to steel beams without drilling. Finish exposed ends with end caps to remove sharp edges.

Installation tips

Check the manufacturer's load data for your span and bracket combination, and allow for the weight of cables, containment and any future additions. Use matching M10 threaded rod, channel nuts and washers from our nuts, bolts and washers range, and treat cut ends of galvanised channel to maintain corrosion protection. Strut also pairs well with galvanised steel trunking in plant rooms and risers.
