Drill Chucks

Drill chucks are the clamping heads fitted to the spindle of a drill that grip the shank of a drill bit, holesaw arbor or driver bit. This category focuses on keyless drill chucks, which tighten and release by hand without a chuck key, making bit changes on site quicker.

Range and availability can change, so check the listings below for current stock or call the sales team. Trade account holders pay trade prices, and in-stock orders before 5pm Monday to Friday reach NI and ROI the next working day.

How to choose a replacement drill chuck

A worn or damaged chuck lets bits slip, wobble or run off line, which spoils holes and wears out bits. Replacing the chuck is often much cheaper than replacing the drill, provided you choose one that fits.

Keyless or keyed?

  • Keyless chucks – tightened by hand by gripping the sleeve, quick for frequent bit changes; single and double sleeve versions exist.
  • Keyed chucks – tightened with a geared key for a very firm grip on larger bits and in demanding applications.
  • SDS adaptors – let an SDS drill hold round-shank bits via a chuck on an SDS shank; usually used with hammer action switched off.

Measurements to check

The two key figures are the mounting thread and the capacity. The mounting thread must match your drill's spindle, common examples being 1/2" x 20 UNF and 3/8" x 24 UNF. Capacity is the range of shank diameters the chuck can grip, for example up to 10mm or 13mm. Check your drill's manual or the existing chuck for markings before ordering.

Fitting tips

Many chucks are retained by a left-hand screw inside the jaws, which must be removed before unscrewing the chuck itself. Unplug the drill or remove the battery first, follow the tool manufacturer's instructions and do not overtighten the new chuck. Keep jaws clean of dust and debris to maintain grip.
