How to choose holesaws, cores and cutting discs

Electricians rely on holesaws for downlight apertures, box entries and cable routes, and on cutting discs for strut, threaded rod and tray. Selecting the right type for the material makes cuts faster and safer.

Holesaws, arbors and kits

  • Bi-metal holesaws – HSS teeth on a flexible backing; versatile for wood, plastic, plasterboard and sheet metal, including steel enclosures.
  • Arbors and pilot drills – the arbor connects the holesaw to the drill and the pilot drill centres the cut; check the arbor fits the size range of your saws.
  • Electricians' and downlight kits – pre-selected sizes for conduit entries and common downlight cut-outs.
  • Diamond cores – for brick, block and concrete, such as for soil pipes, ducts or large cable entries.

Cutting and grinding discs

Match the disc to the grinder size (4.5" or 9") and bore (22mm here) and never exceed the disc's maximum speed rating. Thin 1.0mm Inox discs cut stainless and steel quickly with little burr, while thicker cutting discs are tougher. Grinding discs are designed for removing material with the face, not for cutting, and cutting discs should never be used for side grinding.

Safety and technique

Wear eye protection, gloves and, where appropriate, hearing and dust protection. Keep guards fitted on grinders, clamp the workpiece and let the tool reach speed before cutting. Run holesaws at the speed recommended for the material, use cutting fluid on metal and clear the slug regularly. Check for hidden cables and pipes before cutting into walls and ceilings.
