How to choose a weatherproof switch

Outdoor switches control porch lights, floodlights, garden lighting and equipment in sheds and yards. They have to stay sealed in all weather while remaining easy to operate, often with wet or gloved hands.

Switch types in this range

  • 1 gang 2 way: controls one lighting circuit, wired as 1 way or as part of a 2 way arrangement
  • 2 gang 2 way: controls two circuits from one position, such as a porch light and a floodlight
  • 16A switches: the Gewiss IP56 switches give extra headroom for heavier loads within their rating
  • Modular switches: fit into Gewiss IP55 enclosures alongside other modules

Ratings and features to check

Check the IP rating against the location: IP66 is dust-tight and resists powerful water jets, while IP56 also resists jets with slightly lower dust protection. Look at the current rating and load type, as LED floodlights and fittings with drivers can have high inrush currents, so X-rated or suitably rated switches are a safer choice for these loads. Consider whether a large rocker makes the switch easier to use outdoors.

Installation tips

Mount switches with cable entries at the bottom, use the correct glands or grommets, and do not drill extra holes that compromise the seal. Where lights are controlled automatically, a switch is still useful as an isolator or override for motion detectors. Pair switches with suitable outdoor lighting or floodlights, and follow current wiring regulations and the manufacturer's instructions for outdoor circuits.
