How to find the right switches, sockets and data products
Almost every electrical job finishes at the wall plate, so choosing accessories that suit the room, the load and the environment matters as much as the cabling behind them. This section is organised by where the product will be used, which makes it quicker to narrow down a range and keep finishes consistent across a project.
Everyday switches and sockets
For homes, offices and fit-outs, start with our switches and sockets range. It covers light switches, switched and unswitched sockets, USB sockets, fused spurs, cooker switches and dimmers in white, slimline, decorative metal and metal clad finishes. Grid and Euro modular systems let you build custom plates for kitchens, data points and control panels.
Outdoor, industrial and site power
Where accessories face rain, dust or knocks, standard plastic plates are not enough. Look at:
- Weatherproof switches and sockets with IP55, IP56 and IP66 ratings for gardens, driveways and exterior walls
- Industrial plugs, sockets and couplers to BS EN 60309, colour coded for 110V, 230V and 400V supplies
- Metal clad accessories for garages, plant rooms and workshops
Data, wiring accessories and finishing items
Structured cabling jobs need more than an outlet. Our patch panels and comms cabinets sit alongside RJ45 modules and faceplates, while the wiring accessories section covers back boxes, ceiling roses, door bells, trailing sockets and fire putty pads. Check current wiring regulations and manufacturer instructions for mounting heights, RCD protection and IP requirements before you specify.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a switched and an unswitched socket?
A switched socket has a rocker that lets you cut power to the outlet without unplugging the appliance, while an unswitched socket is live whenever the circuit is on. Switched sockets are the usual choice in homes and offices. Unswitched versions suit fixed appliances behind units, floor positions or places where an accidental switch-off would be a problem, such as fridges or comms equipment.
Should I choose single pole or double pole switched sockets?
Double pole (DP) sockets disconnect both line and neutral when switched off, whereas single pole (SP) sockets break only the line. DP sockets give more complete isolation of the appliance and are widely specified for kitchens, commercial jobs and rentals. Single pole sockets remain common in many domestic installations. Check the project specification and current wiring regulations if you are unsure which is required.
What IP rating should an outdoor socket have?
Most outdoor sockets are rated IP65 or IP66, meaning they are dust-tight and protected against water jets when the cover is closed. IP55 and IP56 are also used for exterior switches and enclosures in more sheltered positions. Outdoor sockets normally need RCD protection, so check current wiring regulations and the manufacturer's instructions, and think about where hoses, pressure washers or standing water might reach.
Can I swap a standard socket for a USB socket without rewiring?
In most cases yes, a USB socket replaces a standard 13A socket on the same circuit and connects to the same terminals. The main check is depth: USB sockets contain electronics, so they often need a deeper back box, typically 35mm or more. Confirm the manufacturer's minimum box depth and isolate the circuit before starting. If you are not competent with electrical work, use a qualified electrician.
Can I match switch and socket finishes across a whole project?
Yes, you can match finishes across most of the range, from plain white square-edge and slimline plates to brushed chrome, polished chrome, satin chrome, black nickel and antique brass. Metal clad suits utility areas, and grid and Euro module plates come in matching finishes for kitchens and data points. Picking one range for sockets, switches, spurs and cooker controls keeps the job consistent.
Can trade customers open an account with Meteor Electrical?
Yes. Electricians, contractors and trade buyers can open a trade account to access trade pricing, and credit accounts are available subject to approval. Phone the team on 028 8675 1515 (048 8675 1515 from ROI), Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm, to get set up. Orders over £30 / €35 ex VAT also qualify for free delivery.
What height should sockets and switches be fitted at?
In new homes and extensions, Approved Document M in England and Wales and similar guidance elsewhere generally places sockets and switches between 450mm and 1200mm above finished floor level so they are easy to reach. Existing installations and other building types can differ. Check current building regulations for the project's location, along with the client's specification, before setting out back boxes.
Are USB sockets safe to leave plugged in?
USB sockets from reputable manufacturers include built-in protection and draw very little power when nothing is charging, so they are designed to stay installed like any other socket. Check the total USB output, as higher-rated or USB-C versions charge tablets and phones faster. Install them in a back box deep enough for the module, and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
What is the difference between screwed and screwless switch plates?
Screwed plates show the fixing screws on the front, which is a traditional, practical look. Screwless plates use a clip-on front cover that hides the screws for a cleaner finish, and are popular in modern and higher-end interiors. Both fit standard back boxes. Decorative metal ranges are often available in both styles, so you can match finishes across a whole project.
Which sockets should I use in a garage or workshop?
Metal clad sockets are the usual choice for garages and workshops because they stand up to knocks better than plastic, and they surface-mount on matching boxes. Use weatherproof IP-rated sockets where there is a risk of water, and industrial 16A or 32A sockets for heavier equipment. Circuits supplying outbuildings normally need RCD protection, so check current wiring regulations.
