A guide to wiring accessories

Wiring accessories are easy to overlook on a materials list, yet one missing item can hold up a job. This section groups the components most electricians need on every first and second fix, so you can order them alongside switches, sockets and cable.

What you will find here

Planning by stage of the job

At first fix you will typically need back boxes in the right depth for each accessory, dry lining boxes for stud walls and fire putty pads where boxes penetrate fire rated linings. At second fix, ceiling roses, pendants and batten holders complete the lighting, while door bells and plug tops finish off specific points. Trailing sockets are useful during the job and for clients who need temporary extra outlets.

Compliance tips

Choose boxes deep enough for the accessory and cables so conductors are not crushed. Maintain fire ratings where dry lined walls are penetrated, and keep low voltage door bell wiring separate from mains wiring where required. Check current wiring regulations and the manufacturer's instructions for each product, particularly ceiling rose load limits and the earthing of metal boxes.

Meteor Electrical has been a family-run electrical wholesaler for more than 40 years, with a head office in Cookstown and depots in Cashel and Saggart. Free delivery applies over £30 / €35 ex VAT, and orders placed by 5pm reach NI and ROI the next working day.
