Most domestic light switches are rated 10A, which is more than enough for typical lighting circuits. 20A switches are often used for heavier loads, commercial lighting or where a double pole isolator is needed, such as for fans or immersion heaters. Check the circuit design and the load being switched, and follow the manufacturer's ratings, especially with LED drivers that create high inrush currents.

A 1 way switch controls a light from one position, a 2 way switch lets you control the same light from two places, and an intermediate switch sits between two 2 way switches to add a third or further control point. Stairs and long hallways usually need 2 way switching. Most 2 way switches can also be wired as 1 way, which simplifies stock on site.

A fused spur, or fused connection unit, provides a fused, fixed connection for an appliance such as an extractor fan, boiler, towel rail or under-cabinet lighting. The fuse protects the appliance's flex and can be sized to the load, typically 3A, 5A or 13A. Switched versions also allow local isolation, and some include a neon indicator or a flex outlet.

Cooker control units and cooker switches are normally 45A double pole, so they disconnect both line and neutral for safe isolation of the appliance. Position it where it can be reached without leaning over the hob, and check current wiring regulations and the appliance instructions for cable size.

A 35mm back box is the usual minimum for USB sockets, and some models need 47mm to leave enough room for the internal electronics and cable terminations. A 25mm box is often too shallow once twin and earth is folded in behind the plate. Always check the depth stated by the manufacturer, and fit a box extension or deeper box rather than forcing the accessory.

Usually yes. Most flush-mounted decorative metal sockets fit the same standard back boxes as plastic versions and connect in the same way. Metal plates need an earth connection, and some deeper accessories, such as USB sockets, need a deeper back box. Isolate the circuit before starting and follow the manufacturer's instructions and current wiring regulations.

A 20A double pole switch disconnects both the live and neutral conductors, giving full isolation of an appliance such as a water heater, extractor fan or kitchen appliance. Many come with a neon indicator to show the supply is on. They are often fitted above worktops or in grid systems so appliances can be isolated without pulling them out.
