Choosing smart home products

Smart home technology covers far more than voice assistants. For electricians, it usually means retrofit-friendly heating, lighting and switching products, plus EV charging. Our range is split into five areas:

  • Smart heaters: ATC Almeria Eco Wi-Fi panel heaters, ATC iLifestyle smart radiators and the Masterplug SmartEnergy Breeze.
  • Smart controls: Secure receivers and thermostats, smart immersion controls, Wi-Fi underfloor thermostats and Wi-Fi fused spurs.
  • Smart switches and sockets: Selectric Kinetic self-powered switches, RF receivers, fobs and retractive switches.
  • Smart lighting: AOne Bluetooth RGBCX lamps and kits plus a Wi-Fi downlight.
  • EV chargers: 7.4kW home chargers and 22kW commercial units.

Key things to check

Connectivity: products may use Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or radio frequency (RF). Wi-Fi gives remote access from anywhere but depends on router coverage; Bluetooth and RF work locally without internet. Load rating: confirm that receivers, spurs and thermostats are rated for the circuit they switch. Wiring: some devices need a neutral at the switch position, while kinetic switches need no wiring at all.

Retrofit vs new build

Wire-free switches, smart lamps and plug-in heaters suit occupied homes where chasing walls is not an option. On new builds and rewires, there is scope to plan circuits for smart controls, add data points and allow supply capacity for EV charging.

Installation and safety

Hard-wired smart devices should be installed by a competent person in line with BS 7671 and the manufacturer's instructions. Check IP ratings for bathrooms or outdoor locations and follow product clearance distances for heaters.

Frequently asked questions

What is the easiest way to make an existing home smart?

Start with products that need little or no new wiring: smart lamps in existing fittings, wire-free kinetic switches, plug-in or Wi-Fi heaters and smart radiator valves. These add app or remote control without major disruption. Hard-wired controls can then be added room by room as part of other electrical work.

Do all smart home devices need Wi-Fi?

No. Some use Wi-Fi for remote access, but others use Bluetooth or radio frequency, which work locally without an internet connection. Kinetic switches, for example, send an RF signal to a receiver. Wi-Fi devices allow control away from home, so choose based on how the system will be used.

Can smart home products save energy?

They can help by heating, lighting and charging only when needed. Schedules, remote adjustment and room-by-room heating control reduce waste, and some products can make use of cheaper tariff periods. Actual savings depend on the property, usage habits and how well the system is set up.

Is smart home equipment compatible across different brands?

Not always. Many products use their own apps or radio protocols, so devices from different manufacturers may not talk to each other directly. Check whether products share a platform or ecosystem, such as a Tuya-based app, before mixing brands. Staying within one range keeps setup simpler.

Do I need an electrician to install smart home devices?

Plug-in devices, smart lamps and battery-powered controls can usually be set up by the user. Anything hard-wired, such as receivers, fused spurs, fixed heaters, thermostats and EV chargers, should be installed by a competent electrician following current wiring regulations and the manufacturer's instructions.

Can I open a trade account for smart home products?

Yes. Electricians and contractors can apply for a trade account to access trade pricing across our smart home range and the rest of our 5,000+ stocked products. Credit accounts are also available, subject to approval. Contact our team on 028 8675 1515 (048 8675 1515 from ROI) for details.

Do smart switches need a neutral wire?

Many smart switches need a neutral connection to power their electronics, which older UK and Irish lighting circuits may not have at the switch. Some models are designed for no-neutral installation, but they can have minimum load requirements or limitations with LED lamps. Check the switch box wiring and the product's installation guide before choosing a smart switch.

Can I install a home EV charger myself?

EV chargers must be installed by a competent, qualified electrician because they involve a dedicated high-current circuit, suitable protective devices and specific earthing arrangements. The installer may also need to notify the network operator. Government or grant scheme requirements, where available, also require approved installers. Check current wiring regulations for electric vehicle charging.

What size EV charger do I need for home charging?

Most home chargers are rated at 7kW on a single-phase supply, which is enough to recharge many cars overnight. Higher-power 11kW or 22kW chargers usually need a three-phase supply. The available supply capacity and the car's onboard charger also limit charging speed. A qualified installer should check the property's supply before choosing a charger.

Can smart heaters be controlled when I'm away from home?

Yes. Wi-Fi smart heaters and controls can usually be managed through a smartphone app, letting you switch heating on, change temperatures or adjust schedules remotely. Features such as open-window detection and adaptive start help reduce wasted energy. A stable Wi-Fi connection where the heater is installed is needed for remote control.
