How to choose smart lighting

Smart lighting ranges from a single app-controlled bulb to a fully connected home. Our selection focuses on simple, retrofit-friendly products that do not require a hub or rewiring.

Lamp fittings

GU10: 5W spotlights for downlights and track lighting.
E27 (screw) and B22 (bayonet): 8W GLS-shaped lamps for pendants, table lamps and ceiling fittings.
Integrated downlights: the Wi-Fi RGB+W downlight replaces a standard fitting for a cleaner look.

Bluetooth vs Wi-Fi

Bluetooth (BT) lamps connect directly to a phone or the AOne remote over short range, with no internet connection needed. Wi-Fi products connect to the home router, allowing control from anywhere and integration with schedules. Bluetooth tends to be simpler to set up; Wi-Fi offers more remote functionality.

Colour and white control

RGBCX means the lamp can produce a full range of colours (RGB) plus adjustable white from warm to cool (CX). This makes one lamp suitable for bright task lighting and relaxed evening settings. Dimming is handled in the app or remote.

Installation tips

Leave the wall switch on, as smart lamps need constant power to respond to commands.
Do not use smart lamps on conventional dimmer switches unless the manufacturer allows it.
Fitting enclosure and heat can affect LED life, so check suitability for enclosed fittings.

For new installations, consider ceiling downlights or wire-free control with smart switches and sockets.

Do smart bulbs need a hub to work?: Not always. The AOne Bluetooth lamps connect directly to a smartphone app or the AOne BT remote, so no hub is required. Wi-Fi smart lights connect through the home router instead. Some other smart lighting systems use a dedicated hub, so check the product details for the control method before buying.
What does RGBCX mean on a smart LED lamp?: RGBCX describes a lamp that can produce red, green and blue colour mixing (RGB) plus tunable white light from warm to cool (CX). It lets one lamp switch between coloured mood lighting and practical white light. The colour and brightness are set from the app or remote.
Can smart bulbs be used with a dimmer switch?: Generally it is not recommended. Smart lamps dim themselves electronically and need full, steady power to stay connected, so a wall dimmer can cause flicker, buzzing or loss of control. Replace the dimmer with a standard switch or follow the lamp manufacturer's guidance.
What happens if someone turns off the wall switch?: The smart lamp loses power and cannot be controlled from the app or remote until the switch is turned back on. When power returns, many lamps come back on at a default setting. To avoid this, leave the switch on or use a wireless smart switch for local control.
Which smart lamp do I need for a ceiling spotlight?: Most mains ceiling spotlights use a GU10 cap, so the 5W GU10 dimmable RGBCX Bluetooth lamp is the usual swap. Check that the fitting is mains voltage rather than low-voltage MR16 and that the lamp fits the fitting's depth. Pendants and table lamps usually take E27 or B22 caps instead.
