How to choose under cabinet and shelf lighting

Good under cabinet lighting removes the shadow that wall units cast over a worktop. The right choice depends on the length of the run, how visible the fitting will be and how the circuit will be switched.

Linear battens or individual cabinet lights

  • Linkable battens such as Kosnic Flax give a continuous line of light along a worktop. Choose the length that suits each unit and join them with interconnection leads so the whole run works from one supply.
  • Puck and cabinet lights such as Fonte, Laghetto and Pozza suit shelves, display cabinets and glass-fronted units, where a pool of light looks better than a strip. Recessed versions sit flush with the panel.
  • Bar-style fittings such as the Arrow range offer a slim surface-mounted option in several wattages.

Specifications to check

Match the batten length to the usable width under each unit, leaving room for the end connector and lead. CCT-switchable fittings let you set warm, neutral or cool white on site, which helps if the customer has not decided or wants to match existing downlights. Check the connection system too: many ranges only link with their own leads, so order the correct interconnection cables at the same time. If you prefer flexible tape in a profile, see our LED strip lights and aluminium profiles.

Installation tips

Mount fittings towards the front edge of the unit so light falls on the worktop rather than the splashback. Keep drivers and connections accessible for maintenance, and avoid positions directly above hobs or sinks unless the product is suitable. Follow current wiring regulations and the manufacturer's instructions for the supply and switching arrangement. A matching faceplate from our switches and sockets range finishes the job, and ceiling downlights help balance general light in the room.
