Emergency Lighting

Emergency lighting is lighting that switches on automatically, or stays lit, when the normal supply fails, so people can find escape routes and exits safely. We stock Kosnic Belum and Doxa 2 exit signs, Kuna Duo emergency bulkheads, Nitro and Kosnic emergency downlights, and SGD emergency ceiling lights, in maintained and non-maintained forms.

Choose manual-test, self-test or DALI-2 versions, plus universal emergency modules, high bay emergency packs and test switches. Account holders get trade rates, and stock items ordered before 5pm on weekdays reach Northern Ireland and Ireland the next working day.

How to choose emergency lighting

Emergency lighting has to work on the one occasion it is needed, so the choice of fitting, test method and position matters as much as the price. Start from the building's emergency lighting design and fire risk assessment, then pick the products to suit.

Main types of emergency fitting

  • Exit signs and exit boxes such as Kosnic Belum and Doxa 2 mark final exits and escape routes, with interchangeable arrow legends.
  • Emergency bulkheads suit corridors, stairwells and external exits, including damp or exposed locations.
  • Emergency downlights give discreet open-area and escape route lighting in finished ceilings.
  • Emergency modules convert battens, panels, high bays and some bulkheads, so standard fittings provide emergency light too.

Manual, self-test or DALI?

Manual-test fittings need someone to simulate a mains failure and record the result. Self-test fittings carry out routine tests automatically and show their status with an indicator, cutting maintenance time on larger sites. DALI and DALI-2 versions report back to a lighting control or monitoring system so faults can be logged centrally. Duo products offer a choice of manual or self-test on site.

Installation and compliance

Emergency fittings need a permanent unswitched supply to keep the battery charged, typically taken from the local lighting circuit. Test switches let maintained and non-maintained fittings be tested without isolating the whole circuit. Design, installation and testing should follow the relevant emergency lighting standards and current wiring regulations, alongside the manufacturer's instructions. Emergency lighting is often planned alongside fire alarm systems, and emergency modules are available for LED battens and industrial high bays.
